I want a horror game that’s not dark, or foggy, or covered in guts and blood. I want a horror game that is set in broad daylight and uses detail to slowly unsettle the gamer, instead of dumb jump scares. I want to play a game that leaves me too nervous to look out windows or in mirrors or be in open spaces. I need something that’s not just another moody game where monsters chase you through nasty surroundings.
While it does have some monsters, LIMBO is atmospheric as shit.
I havent played it (yet) but Gone Home is supposed to be amazing.
About the "gamer" thing and tabletop games not getting inclusion, despite that TT games have obviously been around longer, I'm not aware of any term at all, recent or established, that pertains to such persons beyond "tabletop gamer." It seems it comes down to when "gamer" was termed and how its use has changed since, as it didn’t always mean what it does now. It doesn’t help that TT gaming is still somewhat under the radar/niche and seen as lesser because of stereotypes and ignorance.
Well, there are the more specific terms of RPG Gamer or Board gamer, War Gamer is another one for people who play Miniature War games such as Warhammer, Warmachine, as well as the myriad Historical Battle games.
As far as the term “gamer” coming into the popular lexicon, I have no idea. But with the easy accessibility and lack of social stigma of video games, people flocked to them. Even newer card games like M:tG in the 90s faced some persecution by parents wary of Satanic influence.
Ive really only noticed the term Gamer used the way it has with such widespread use in the last 10 years, give or take. Basically, the Internet. As the world got smaller, communication got easier, and the simple sheer number of video game related message boards and social sites relegated Tabletop fold to the fringes.
SDCC in the last few years also has a huge Video Game presence. Not so much for Tabletop. Some, maybe. But SDCC has about as much to do with Tabletop games as it does with Comics anymore. It may be there, but you wont see it covered in the media.
Not that dislike video games mind… But the difference is this..
How many people, when you tell like you like RPGs, will assume you mean games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, KotoR, and WoW. When in actuality you mean D&D, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, or GURPS.
